Black & Veatch Christmas in October
The Black & Veatch Christmas in October event will show Girl Scouts to the various professions available at an engineering, consulting, and construction company. Participants will learn about the various disciplines of construction including construction management, procurement, safety, and planning. Additionally, this event allows participants to develop their practical homeownership skills all while giving back to their local community.
This event will allow participants to understand the various critical job positions within the Construction Management industry by observing and reporting on tasks within each of the following categories:
- • Project Manager: Identifies and helps assign the required tasks for the project. Ensures that the project is getting done on time and within budget.
- • Procurement Manager: Identifies and helps obtain the materials and tools required for the project.
- • Safety Manager: Assesses the work environment for possible safety hazards and identifies hazards to the group of volunteers. Distributes protective wear for the project (glasses, gloves, etc.).
- • Construction Manager: Helps assign the designated tasks to the volunteers and ensures workers have what they need to complete the tasks.
The scouts will be provided with a packet of pictures of the house they’ll be working on and will be tasked with coming up with a list of applicable home improvement activities, researching the tools and materials needed to complete each activity, and understanding the safety hazardous associated with home improvement.
On the day of the event, the girls will be responsible for discussing their research, leading a safety audit prior to the start of the work, interacting with the homeowner, and assisting with supervising the progress of the work (including conducting some tasks themselves).
It will be expected that the girls introduce themselves to the homeowner and thank them for the opportunity to volunteer at their house. If the girl’s choose to bring a decorative gift (such as a pumpkin or potted mums or other fall flowers) to present to the homeowner, they may do so.
Cost Per Person: No cost. T-shirt provided.
Location: Specific location varies. Details will be shared upon sign up. Will be on the eastside of Kansas City, MO
Additional Info: Girls will need to wear jeans and closed toes shoes. Safety glasses and gloves will be provided at the event in addition to a t-shirt. Girls need to be prepared to work outside which will require sunscreen and bug spray. Water will be provided.
