Through engineering and designing a balloon-powered car, participants will garner a greater understanding of the different types of energy and an introduction to the concept of propulsion. Participants will research potential and kinetic energy before this event to foster a pre-design discussion about the physics behind the balloon car. After brainstorming possible balloon car designs, participants will work in a group to design, build, and test a functioning balloon car! Throughout this process, participants will be encouraged to adapt and modify their original designs to overcome challenges they meet. After each team produces a final balloon car design, we will test the cars, analyze the results, and brainstorm ways to improve the design in the future! At the end of this event, participants will receive the Junior Mechanical Engineering Badge 2: Balloon Car Design Challenge.
