Federal Bar Association Democracy Book Club

The Kansas and Western District of Missouri chapter of the Federal Bar Assocation is pleased to offer the Summer Democracy Book Club for Juniors, which will meet all elements of the Democracy Badge for Juniors. Participants will receive the books Turning Pages: My Life Story by Sonia Sotomayor; Farmers Unite! Planting a Protest for Fair Prices by Lindsay H. Metcalf; and Rebel Girls Lead: 25 Tales of Powerful Women (a nearly $40 value). Register individually or as a troop. The $5 registration fee covers one set of books.

There will be 3 Zoom book club discussions as a part of the program:

  • June 16, 6:30 PM - 7:00 PM: U.S. Magistrate Judge Teresa J. James will lead the Zoom book club discussion about Justice Sotomayor’s book and will talk about the role of the judiciary.
  • June 30, 6:30 PM - 7:00 PM: Lindsay H. Metcalf will talk about her own book, Farmers Unite!, the power or peaceful protest, and the role of the legislative branch. 
  • July 14, 6:30 PM - 7:00 PM: Prominent Kansas City immigration attorney Mira Mdivani will finish off the book club discussing Rebel Girls Lead and the role of the executive branch and state and local government. 

Immigration attorney Danielle Atchison will moderate all three book club discussions, which will begin at 6:30 p.m. and wrap up by 7 p.m.

Additional info: If you’re in the Kansas City or Lawrence area and are able to pick up books at the Girl Scout Overland Park office or at a Lawrence troop leader’s residential address, please indicate this on the registration. Otherwise, books will be mailed directly to you. We will follow up with you with more information regarding book pick-up times.
