Registration Requirements:  All girls participating as a Girl Scout in these activities must be registered Girl Scout members. If attending as a troop, all volunteers also need to be registered members and/or have completed and approved background checks. If non-registered individuals (adults or tags) are allowed to participate in this activity supplemental insurance is required. Use the Insurance Purchase Form to purchase insurance at least 3 weeks prior to the event. Completed forms can be emailed to programapprovals@gsksmo.org.

I Spy in the Garden

 Daisy   Brownie

This interactive guided garden walk is designed to engage Daisies and Brownies to carefully observe elements of the gardens and introduce them to related vocabulary. Girls sense of sight, smell, touch, taste and sound will be engaged as they experience the ever-changing seasonal aspects of the gardens. A hands-on drawing experience will invite girls to individually reflect upon their observations.

This activity takes 60 minutes; 30 minutes of walking and 30 minutes of activity.

Available Monday through Friday at the following times:
9:00-10:00 am
10:15-11:15 am
11:30 a.m. - 12:30 pm
12:45-1:45 pm
2:00-3:00 pm
3:25-4:15 pm
4:30-5:30 pm

These hour long experiences must be reserved at least 2 weeks in advance of your desired visit date. All tour reservations are first-come, first-served, based on availability. Total payment for tour admissions is due the day of your visit in the form of a check, cash or credit card based on the total number of adults and children attending. All fees are to be paid in the Visitor Education Center during group leader check-in at the front desk.

Cost Per Girl: $8 (max of 60 attendees)

Pollinator Parade

​Girl Scouts will explore the critical role of bees, ladybugs, butterflies, moths and other pollinators in relation to our region's food sources. Girls will learn and understand basic plant science: the parts and functions of a leaf, stem, root and seed; the importance of sunlight, water and soil in the growing process; and the role of native plants as attractants and food sources for pollinators. Participants will examine native plants, vegetables and fruits that can be grown in our region through guided exploration of the prairie, Children's Garden, Heartland Harvest Garden and/or greenhouses.

Available Monday – Friday at the following times:

Wilderness Woodland Walk

​This guided experience leads girl scouts through the David T. Beals III Woodland and Stream Garden to explore native trees, shrubs and herbaceous plants in all seasons. Girls will learn which plants grow well in the Midwestern region and specifically Missouri. Participants will notice and investigate bark patterns, leaf shapes, seeds or other identifying characteristics of trees, plants and shrubs while also spotting insects, birds and traces of mammal activity (tracks and scat) and studying the natural diversity of this site. This experience begins in the classroom, with guides then leading an exploration of the Byron Shutz Nature Trail or Beals Woodland and Stream Garden. Field notebooks and other observational, naturalist tools are included in this experience.

Get Your Garden On

​This guided tour experience invites girl scouts to explore elements of landscape design and see how gardeners and horticulturists "plan to plant" based on season, color, garden location, region, texture, scale, shape, budget and purpose of an intended garden. Students will compare and contrast several planted areas at Powell Gardens, learn about select plants and design an imagined garden space using graph paper, rulers, colored pencils, photos and other resources.

Design for Life: Good To Grow

​This special program, generously funded by the Truman Heartland Community Foundation and others, is designed for grades 3-5 and features an introduction to plant science (including photosynthesis and plant pollination), the journey from seed-to-plate and the importance of healthy eating and includes and guided tour of several garden spaces. 

All Good to Grow reservations must be booked at least two weeks in advance of your desired visit date. All reservations are first-come, first-served based on availability. Total payment for program admission is due the day of your visit in the form of check, cash or credit card based on the total number of adults and children attending. All fees are to be paid in the Visitor Education Center during tour group check-in.

Available Monday – Friday at the following times:
9:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m.
1:00-3:00 p.m.

Girl Scouts must remain in GSUSA ratios.
