American Red Cross

The American Red Cross has served the people of Kansas City and Western Missouri for more than 100 years.

Our mission is to prevent and alleviate human suffering in the face of emergencies by mobilizing the power of volunteers and the generosity of donors.  We provide response to disaster victims, emergency communications for military families, preparedness information, international tracing services, and training in first aid, CPR and water safety. We also collect and distribute life-saving blood products.

The Pillowcase Project

 Brownie   Junior

Location: Red Cross chapter offices or we can come to you!

The Pillowcase Project teaches children how to prepare for emergencies by packing essential items in a common household pillowcase. In addition, the program provides basic coping skills to be employed during stressful situations. The program vision is to create a generation of children who understand the science of hazards, are empowered to take action by practicing how to prepare for emergencies, and understand that by sharing what they have learned with family and friends, they can help create a prepared community.

The goals of the program include:

  • Increase youth awareness of hazards and the importance of personal preparedness
  • Build skills in hazard-specific protective actions to reduce the impact of emergencies on youth and their families
  • Increase coping skills to manage emergencies and build resilience in youth
  • Increase household preparedness levels

Additional Information:
The Pillowcase Project is sponsored by The Walt Disney Company. Each participant will each receive a My Preparedness Workbook, certificate of completion, and have the opportunity to decorate and personalize pillowcases which are pre-printed with Disney characters.

Please note, we cover all Missouri counties and many Kansas counties. If you are in Kansas, please call 816-863-1835 to see if your county is within our grant guidelines.
