The Coterie Theatre

The Coterie Theatre provides unique theatre experiences for families and young audiences. The company is nationally-recognized for its one-of-a-kind programming that features a year-round season of live plays and musicals on the company's mainstage, as well as acting and theatre classes year-round for PreK-12th grades at multiple locations around Kansas City, including an extensive summer program of classes and performance camps. Established in 1979, The Coterie is a not-for-profit professional theatre company with the mission of educating, entertaining, and challenging audiences by opening lines of communication between races, sexes, and generations.

Registration Requirements: All girls participating as a Girl Scout in these activities must be registered Girl Scout members. If attending as a troop, all volunteers also need to be registered members and/or have completed and approved background checks. If non-registered individuals (adults or tags) are allowed to participate in this activity supplemental insurance is required. Use the Insurance Purchase Form to purchase insurance at least 3 weeks prior to the event. Completed forms can be emailed to programapprovals@gsksmo.org.

The Coterie’s Acting Classes
  All levels

Dates: Exact dates vary by location; Full winter term runs January 22 – March 3, 2018 and full spring term runs April 2 – May 5, 2018.

The Coterie’s acting classes introduce students, ages 3 through high school, to the joy and excitement of theatre. Our focus on the actor's tools (body, voice, and imagination) allows students and teaching artists to work together on the process of acting, guiding each student to achieve their own personal goals. Participants in every class build self-esteem and confidence as they refine their creativity, active listening, and concentration skills. Students will be challenged to grow as actors and creative thinkers while learning valuable tools of collaboration and imagination, tools that will remain valuable for a lifetime. Our extensively-trained staff of adult teaching artists are respected professionals actively working in their respective fields and are skilled at inspiring every experience level. Each Coterie acting class is 60-90 minutes long and meets one day each week for a six-week term.

Tuck Everlasting

Dates: February 27, 2018-April 5, 2018

The Coterie presents Natalie Babbitt’s popular story of the Tuck family - and their secret to never aging. Over a century ago, the Tucks - Ma, Pa, and their sons Miles and Jesse - drank from a forest spring and no one in the family has aged a bit since. They’ve had to live separately to avoid suspicion as to why they never age, seeing each other only when they reunite every ten years. Now, young Winnie Foster is out exploring the woods, and accidentally discovers the Tuck family secret... leading her to the question: Is living outside the rules of time a blessing or a curse?

Start Times: 10am, 12pm, 7pm, 2pm (performances times vary by date). Performance runs 65 minutes with no intermission

Jack and the Bean Mágico!

Dates: April 17, 2018-May 20, 2018

The Coterie presents an interactive, bi-lingual adaptation of the classic fairytale, “Jack and the Beanstalk,” told with the audience’s help, who assist Jack as he climbs the beanstalk and emerges on the giant’s land. In the giant’s rich and fertile garden - where young audiences become tiny bugs to help keep the soil healthy - Jack uncovers the source of troubles with his own farmland and learns how to make it fertile again by understanding and balancing the life cycle.

Start Times: 10am, 12pm, 7pm, 2pm (performances times vary by dates. Performance runs 60 minutes with no intermission

Goosebumps: The Phantom of the Auditorium – The Musical

Dates: June 19, 2018-August 5, 2018

The Coterie presents a new musical based on R.L. Stine’s Goosebumps book series. Brooke and Zeke have been cast as the leads in the school's new production of an old play about a phantom. Mysterious things start interrupting rehearsals and they have to wonder: is this someone's idea of a joke or is the Phantom real? A silly and spooky musical adventure ensues that will bring out your inner sleuth and keep everyone in suspense until the final curtain.

Start Times: 11am, 1pm, 7pm (performances times vary by date). Performance runs 75 minutes with no intermission
