This session provides hands-on learning about “key framing,” “frame rates" and how the "persistence of vision" makes still images appear to move to the viewer.  In this session the student will construct a simple "thaumatrope," a "flipbook" that simulates animation and she will view examples of animation at different frame rates.

Thaumatropes are the earliest version of cartoons, and so simple to make! Flipbooks are a technique that Disney cartoon animators use.  Learn how in this class!

Lights! Camera! Action! Here’s your troop’s chance for stardom!

Create a short video clip (30 – 120 seconds long) that includes your entire troop participating in a video message you can share with others through social media. Plan your troop’s message and then participate in an on-site video production shoot to capture your troops talents in delivering that message. Here are just some of the options to consider for your troop’s video message:

  • A video collage of each troop member reciting a line from the Girl Scout Promise or the Girl Scout Law
  • A video of your troop singing a favorite Girl Scout song
  • A video advertisement created by your troop to help with cookie sales
  • A public service announcement created by your troop to support a favorite cause

This program features two sessions for your troop:

  1. Planning Session: in this 90-minute session you will brainstorm the creative video solution you will develop as a troop. You will also create a storyboard of the key elements to be captured in your video message. Girls will also start work on any creative graphics needed for the final video (e.g. background scene, images, logos, photos, titles, etc.).
  2. Video Shoot Session: in this one-hour session your troop’s video and audio production will be recorded under studio lights against a green screen backdrop.

Your troop can also be involved in a third (optional) session in which you collaborate online with the video editor on solutions for the final edited message (e.g. background music, sound effects, backgrounds, pacing, etc.).

Be creative!  Want to show how yummy Girl Scout cookies are? Use a stop-motion technique to show a variety of cookies on a plate that disappear bite by bite. Have girls dressed as their favorite Girl Scout cookies pitching why to they are the best one to choose. Create your troop’s own dance moves for your favorite Girl Scout song. Use your imagination!

Additional info: Minimum number of girls is 5 and the maximum is 12. Class length is approximately 60-90 minutes. A photo release waiver must be signed before attending.

Materials needed:

  • Art supplies for images or graphics to be included in the production (e.g. magic markers, crayons, paper, tape, scissors, etc.).
  • Blank 4X6 cards for storyboards
  • Tape or push pins to mount the 4X6 cards in their correct sequence
  • 32GB SD card to store the video (can be purchased at most stores)

Cost per girl: $5 per session (minimum of 2 sessions)
Cost per adult: N/A
