The Johnson County Museum strives to bring the history of our community to life through engaging exhibits and hands-on programming.

Becoming Johnson County Exhibit and KidScape

  All Levels

Explore the rich history of Johnson County as you walk through our brand-new exhibit, Becoming Johnson County. Try out some of our fun interactives, complete our scavenger hunt, and even spend some time playing in our kid-sized historical community, KidScape. (KidScape recommended for girls 3rd grade and under.)

Behind the Scenes Tour

 Junior   Cadette   Senior   Ambassador

Interact with museum staff as you learn why we collect, how we collect, and the importance to our local community. Our collection features over 17,000 3D objects and over one million images. The Johnson County Arts & Heritage Center holds the museum’s two-dimensional collection, including manuscripts, maps, photographs, and quilts. This experience includes admission to our brand-new exhibit, Becoming Johnson County. The tour lasts 1 hour, and exhibit exploration time is unlimited.

Thank You Community Helpers

What is a community and who are the helpers? Learn about and meet some of the real people who help in Johnson County. Play a cooperative game, do a “thank you” activity in the classroom, tour the exhibit, and explore KidScape! This program lasts 1.5 hours.

Community Planners Challenge

 Brownie   Junior

Students watch the story of Johnson County unfold, then work together to create a city of their dreams! Working in small groups, students choose a mayor and plan roads, buildings, landscapes, and special places. Includes KidScape exploration time for 2nd and 3rd grades and an exhibit tour showcasing local history. This program lasts 1.5 hours, with additional time for KidScape play for Brownies.

History Detectives

Put on your white gloves and grab your clipboards! Use your observational and critical thinking skills as you evaluate a mystery object from the past. Includes KidScape exploration time for up through 3rd grade and an exhibit tour showcasing local history. This program lasts 1.5 hours.

Lanesfield Historic Site
Lanesfield School Escape Room: Scandal at the Schoolhouse    

 Junior   Cadette   Senior   Ambassador

Solve the mystery of the missing school marm at this new escape-room style adventure, and learn a little local history on your journey! Begin in the visitor center with a costumed schoolteacher, and head off to the 1904 schoolhouse to uncover the clues. But hurry—you’ve only got 1 hour to save the school! 

Cost Per Girl: $20
Cost Per Adult:  Free for up to two supervising adults, $20 for additional participating adults    

Additional Info: This experience is best for ages 10+. Experience is recommended for a maximum of 8 participants. Someone in the party must be 18 or older. We will not mix groups; your group will be the only one on the day you schedule. 

Days/Times: You Schedule It between 9:30 and 4:30 Mon-Thur. or between 9:30-12 Fri-Sat.

Lanesfield Historic Site Tour

Built in 1869, the one-room schoolhouse stands as the last trace of the once-thriving town of Lanesfield, Kansas. Gather some friends for a drop-in public tour, and learn about rural life and education from a costumed tour guide.

Farm Families Program

Time: Friday and Saturday from 9am-1pm

Expand your visit to the Lanesfield Historic Site to learn about farm life and chores, and complete actual one-room schoolhouse lessons from 1904. This 1½ hour program is available by appointment. Program must be scheduled at least 2 weeks in advance. We welcome groups on No School Days!
