Remington Nature Center

The Remington Nature Center of St. Joseph provides an opportunity for education and interpretation of nature and conservation, relative to the significance of the Missouri River and Northwest Missouri. The City of St. Joseph utilizes the 13,000 square foot center for educational purposes in an entertaining and enjoyable environment. With the variety of displays and information available, the center appeals to people of all ages and interests. Several interactive components allow people to use their senses to learn about and appreciate the natural environment, as well as the events that impacted nature in and around Northwest Missouri.

Registration Requirements:  All girls participating as a Girl Scout in these activities must be registered Girl Scout members. If attending as a troop, all volunteers also need to be registered members and/or have completed and approved background checks. If non-registered individuals (adults or tags) are allowed to participate in this activity supplemental insurance is required. Use the Insurance Purchase Form to purchase insurance at least 3 weeks prior to the event. Completed forms can be emailed to programapprovals@gsksmo.org.


Nature and STEM Programming

Remington Nature Center offers unique Nature and STEM one hour workshops for any size troop! Once your program is over (choose from below) Girl Scouts are encouraged to view our 7,000-gallon freshwater aquarium, explore the history of the St. Joseph area, and stand trunk to nose with a woolly mammoth replica. Enjoy seeing the honey bees thrive in an observation beehive, learn about finches in our aviary home and see how water goes from a source to our tap in our exhibit "Water's Journey."

Let’s Talk Tornadoes: Girl Scouts will learn safety tips for tornado season and test their knowledge as we play a quiz game on severe weather safety. We will also make a tornado each child can take home. (no more than 40 participants)

Creepy Crawly Creatures: This program shows kids up-close and hands-on examples of insects, snakes, bugs and other creatures. Each child will make a “Silly Snake” to take home.

It’s for the Birds: We’re going in-depth about birds as we examine everything about them, including showing examples of feathers, eggs and nests. We’ll be playing a game to test your bird knowledge, and making a treat for outdoor birds

Mock Archeological Dig

Interested in archaeology? Want to learn more about what archaeologists do, and what they might find? Participate in a mock dig where we simulate an archaeological site. Your group will find and take home authentic Native American artifacts that were unearthed here in the Midwest. Each participant will also get to keep their site flag, and will receive a certificate of participation. (for groups less than 25)

Remington Nature Center offers lots of fun craft workshops! Girl Scouts Can do a variety of activities such as build a bird feeder, make cave drawings or create fun splatter blobs! Multiple dates (these are NOT YOU SCHEDULE IT events), view this flyer for more information.
