BikeWalkKC

Our mission is to redefine our streets as places for people to build a culture of active living. We work to make Greater Kansas City a safer and more accessible place to walk, bicycle, live, work, and play.

Location: We can come to you - sites within a 20-mile radius of our office is included, a mileage fee ($0.58/mile) will be assessed for mileage beyond 20 miles. A parking lot or black top works best. BikeWalkKC’s office is centrally located in Midtown KC (1106 E 30th Street, KCMO 64109) and can host a class as well.

GET MOVING! Workshop*

 Junior

Participants will learn how to conduct a walk-ability study and learn about the impact of the environment on biking and walking. This is done by taking a short walk around a school, neighborhood, grocery store or other location of choice and analyzing things like sidewalk conditions, traffic speed and behavior, overall comfort level and other barriers present. Participants will use data collected on the walk to give the area a “score” of walkability and begin a discussion about how we can take action to make the area safer and more walkable/bikeable.

Cost Per Girl: $35/per instructor/hour (Groups over 12 may need two instructors) Workshops typically last 2 hours, but can be adjusted depending on the needs of your Troop.

Girl Scout Walking Club

 All Levels

Starting a walking club is an easy way to add physical activity to your day, network with friends and learn new routes to fun neighborhood destinations. Once school resumes, the walking club structure can easily be repurposed into a Walking School Bus that can offer a transportation alternative to riding a school bus.

Topics covered include how to map a route, pedestrian safety, how to include advocacy into a walking club.

Support offered includes BWKC instructor presence on walk, facilitated listening sessions to understand challenges and successes to maintaining a walking club

How we're staying safe: Masks required, outdoor activity with lots of space, instructors and students will keep a safe distance from all other participants.

Guided Bicycle Ride

 All Levels

Our Guided Bike Ride incorporates safety and physical activity with no route planning or bike hauling necessary on your end! Rides can happen in your neighborhood, around a school, or in a local park with a trail. BikeWalkKC can bring the bikes, helmets, and instructors - you bring the girls and your sense of adventure. Adults are strongly encouraged to ride with us to experience how much fun riding as a group can be and to learn how to facilitate more group rides for your troop.  

Additional info: Bicycle riding experience is highly preferred.

Cost per girl: $35/hour/BWKC instructor + coordination fee 
Cost per adult: N/A

BLAST! Bicycle Lesson and Safety Training

 Daisy     Brownie    Junior    Cadette    Senior  

Through hands-on demos and an on-bike course, participants will learn about basic bicycle safety, traffic rules, bicycle maintenance and handling skills. Specific skills practice will include helmet fitting, rules of the road, how to ride on a path, ABC bicycle safety check, how to fix a flat tire, starting and stopping, scanning and signaling. The course can be broken up into individual, specific sections or taught as a whole/all at once. Participants are encouraged to bring their own bicycles and helmets. This is an inclusive course and can be taught to a variety of skill levels.

*For an additional cost, BikeWalkKC can bring our bike and helmet fleet if participants do not have bicycles.

Maintain Your Ride

Participants will learn how to remove a wheel, fix a flat and keep their ride looking fresh and clean. Participants are strongly encouraged to bring their bike to practice the mechanical demonstrations. Please contact education@bikewalkkc.org if you don't have a bicycle and would like this opportunity to earn one.

Additional info: This workshop runs for 3 hours. At the end of the workshop girls will receive a tire patch kit and 2 tire levers.

Cost: $250 for up to 15 girls
