Challenge Island of Southern Johnson County

Challenge Island® partners with Girl Scout councils nationwide, and we also offer fully interactive, hands-on STEAM Girl Scout workshops for girls of all ages - Daisy through Ambassador! Our workshops are designed by a certified Challenge Island Owner who is also a Lifetime Girl Scout and a former Girl Scout Council Director. These classes are fully interactive with the teacher and completely hands-on activities. We have put together a special workshop just for you!

Location: Will travel to troop meetings within 66062, 66207, 66219, 66221, 66223, 66213, 66210, 66208, 66206, 66211, 66209, 66224, 66215, 66214, 66212, and 66218. for free.  Areas outside those zip codes will charge an extra travel fee.

Automotive Engineering Triple Badge Workshop

 Daisy   Brownie   Junior

Workshop is scheduled as one 3-hour workshop (or can be split over multiple troop meetings) with design build challenges, Certificate of Completion & exclusive Challenge Island patch. This does not include the badge. Girls can purchase their completed badge  at www.gsksmo.org/shop.  

Girl Scout(s) will use the Engineering Design Process to complete the badge requirements for these three badges by learning about the design process, engineering process, and manufacturing process in the automotive industry.  They will learn about the automotive industry history, mobility, the parts of a car, design features and safety features.  

After sketching & sculpting a design of a vehicle for a specific purpose they will incorporate their design features and design criteria list into their prototype. They will then work together to create & implement an assembly line for multiple builds.

Think Like an Engineer Journey Workshop

 All Levels 

Workshop is scheduled as one 3-hour workshop (or can be split over multiple troop meetings) with design build challenges, Certificate of Completion & exclusive Challenge Island patch. This does not include the badge. Girls can purchase their completed badge  at www.gsksmo.org/shop.  

At each workshop session, girls will use the Engineering Design Process to understand a real-world issue, create a design build around the topic, and will have the opportunity to show off their go-getter ingenuity to their fellow Girl Scouts. 

With participation in all three Journey workshop sessions, girls complete the entire Journey except for the Take Action Project which must come from the girls' vision and be implemented in their community per GSUSA requirements.  The Take Action Project will need to be completed as a Girl Scout troop or as an individual in order to complete the Journey requirements.

Daisy Toy Business Designer Badge Workshop

In the Daisy Toy Business Designer Badge Workshop, girls will use the Engineering Design Process to complete the badge requirements by learning how to create a themed toy and coming up with ideas to make it a better toy.  Then girls will create a poster to market their product and pitch it to the group.

Brownie Budding Entrepreneur Badge Workshop

 Brownie

In the Brownie Budding Entrepreneur Badge Workshop, girls will use the Engineering Design Process to complete the badge requirements by listening to a female Entrepreneur's story and the story of another famous Entrepreneur who changed how we live.  Girls will come up with a new themed restaurant business with unique products and services, design prototypes, and test those prototypes.  As Engineers do, girls will share their ideas to get feedback and make improvements on their business and products. Then girls will pitch their business to the group.  

Workshop is scheduled as one 2-hour workshop with a design build challenge, Certificate of Completion & exclusive Challenge Island patch. This does not include the badge. Girls can purchase their completed badge at www.gsksmo.org/shop.

Junior Product Designer Badge Workshop

 Junior

Girl Scouts will use the Engineering Design Process to complete the badge requirements by learning about product design, evaluation, and improvement, as well as solving a problem and end-users.  Once these are taken into account, they will then be able to redesign a well used product for their household uses.

Junior Business Jumpstart Badge Workshop

Girl Scouts will learn about the Inventor of the Loop the Loop then brainstorm ideas for a new themed rollercoaster ride. Teams will build a prototype of their ride, pitch their idea and get funding to go into business.

Cadette Entrepreneur Badge Workshop

Working together, teams will design a business plan and pitch their business to investors.  Then they will design a logo and build a working safari ride!
