Registration Requirements: All girls participating as a Girl Scout in this activity must be registered Girl Scout members. If attending as a troop, all volunteers also need to be registered members and/or have completed and approved background checks. If non-registered individuals (adults or tags) are allowed to participate in this activity supplemental insurance is required. Use the Insurance Purchase Form to purchase insurance at least 3 weeks prior to the event. Completed forms can be emailed to programapprovals@gsksmo.org.

Providing Hope

 All ages

Our Providing Hope Workshop is taught by a trained ScrapsKC leader who will engage your group in an age-appropriate, interactive discussion about homelessness and the needs of the men and women who live on our streets. The group will assemble sock kits that will be distributed to the homeless and create "plarn" which is used to make mats for the homeless. Participating groups will be asked to bring two items that will be added to the sock kits.

Feeding the Homeless

Saturdays, 8:15 - 9:45 am

Our Feeding the Homeless workshop is taught by a trained ScrapsKC leader and is designed to help your group understand the needs of the homeless, break down stigmas, and provide an opportunity to work directly with the homeless. Each workshop will include homeless outreach education, time to cook breakfast sandwiches, prepare supplies, and serve the meal out on the street. This workshop is limited to 10 people.

Hands-on Creative Reuse Workshop

During the Hands-On Creative Reuse Workshop, a ScrapsKC event leader will ​teach participants to reuse a Crayola marker to make water color paints, a jumprope, and other STEAM projects! Participants will spend time creating a one-of-a-kind masterpiece using repurposed materials.

Board Game Design Workshop

During our Board Game Design Workshop, a Scraps KC event leader will teach participants about inventing, brainstorming, and design by creating, testing, and improving their own board game. Girls will use items from our creative reuse center to utilize unique materials in new ways and use their creativity to design rules and goals for their games, which they’ll take home at the end of the workshop.

Roller Coaster Design Workshop

In the Roller Coaster Workshop, a Scraps KC event leader will teach participants about kinetic energy, force, and gravity, then will lead them through an activity to design a simple roller coaster car and create ramps and hills, all with materials from our creative reuse center. After testing the roller coaster track, participants will discuss what worked, what didn’t, and why, then improve their roller coaster to go faster or stay on track.

Model Car Design Workshop

In the Model Car Workshop, a ScrapsKC event leader will teach participants about friction and force. Participants will build a model car from various materials in our creative reuse center, and will test them on different surfaces to see how friction affects momentum. Participants will then build a track and race their cars, and will learn how to test their engineering projects in a controlled way, so they can improve them. Participants will leave with their model car and a small engineering kit.

Fling Flyer STEM Workshop

In the Fling Flyer Workshop a Scraps KC event leader will teach participants about Force, Thrust, Lift, and Drag. A Scraps KC event leader will teach them about different flying machines, and everyone will brainstorm and experiment with various types of paper gliders, then make a fling flyer to test and improve. Participants will learn how to record results, share and analyze data, and collaborate to improve their designs! Participants will take their Fling Flyer and a small engineering kit home with them.

Leap Bot STEM Workshop

In the LeapBot and Springs Workshop, a Scraps KC event leader will teach participants about springs, potential and kinetic energy, and what a mechanical engineer is. Everyone will work to brainstorm, design, and test their own LeapBot, then will learn to record data from their experiment and share it with the group. Participants will take their LeapBot and a small engineering kit home with them.

Race Car Design Workshop

In the Race Car Design Workshop, participants will learn about force, friction and aerodynamics. They will build a race car from various materials in our creative reuse center, then design a track with at least one ramp and at least one turn to test their cars, understand what makes the cars faster or slower, and improve their design. Participants will leave with their racecar and a small engineering kit.

Painting Exploration Workshop

During our Exploring Painting workshop, a Scraps KC event leader will teach participants to explore paintings that inspire them, learn about various styles of painting, practice painting with unique tools rather than brushes, and learn that we can express ourselves and our emotions through painting. Participants will also create a travel art kit with items from our creative reuse center to take home with them. *All paint will be washable, but please wear clothing that can get messy.

Paddle Boat Workshop

During our Paddle Boat Design Workshop, a Scraps KC event leader will teach participants about potential and kinetic energy, highlighting ways in which we see both at work in our everyday lives. Participants will explore how paddle boats work and use the Design Thinking Process to brainstorm, engineer, test, and improve their own paddle boats using various materials from our creative reuse center. Participants will take home their paddle boat, as well as a small engineering kit of repurposed items.

Breakout Detectives Workshop

During the Breakout Detectives Workshop, a Scraps KC event leader will teach participants about various codes and how to communicate in secret, as well as have their observation skills tested. Participants will learn about fingerprints and DNA and how they are unique to each individual, and when they are ready, everyone will test their new detective skills against a Scraps KC Breakout Box. Participants will create their own secret cipher bracelet to take home.

Balloon Car Workshop

In the Balloon Car Workshop, participants will learn about potential and kinetic energy by designing, building, and testing a balloon car. Our Scraps KC event leader will discuss different ways to power a car, then participants will collaborate and share their results so they can brainstorm to improve their cars. Everyone will leave with their balloon powered car and a small engineering kit.

Crane Design Workshop

In the Crane Design Workshop, a Scraps KC event leader will teach the Design Thinking Process, as well as Simple and Compound machines. Participants will design and build a crane with what they learned, and perform tests so they can share their results and brainstorm ways to improve their design. Participants will leave with their crane as well as a small engineering kit made from items in our creative reuse center.

Musical Exploration Workshop

During the Junior Musician workshop, a Scraps KC event leader will teach participants about different types of music and sound, show participants what their voice looks like using a tonoscope, and explore musical instruments from different parts of the world. Participants will create an instrument (from a variety to choose from) with repurposed materials in our creative reuse center, and make their own music to perform for friends and family at a later date, or for the Scraps KC staff/volunteers if applicable.

Jewelry Making Workshop

In the Junior Jeweler workshop, a Scraps KC event leader will teach participants about different tools used in jewelry making with items in our creative reuse center. Participants will create a metal piece of jewelry first (washer necklace, bracelet with metal beads, bottlecap pin or other repurposed costume jewelry, depending on resources available at Scraps KC at the time), then will learn to roll beads made from repurposed magazines into different shapes. Lastly, participants will create two sparkling SWAPS to give away.

Simple Meals Workshop

In the Simple Meals Workshop, a ScrapsKC event leader will give participants a tour of our kitchen and teach them basic cooking tools, then participants will plan and cook 12 breakfast sandwiches, a lunch, and a brownie dessert for our homeless volunteers to eat while volunteering at ScrapsKC. To end the session, we’ll discuss how the meals will help the homeless, and participants can create thank you cards for anyone who has donated food to be cooked!

Cost: $5 per girl, and Scraps KC will work with the troop leader on how the girls might get the food supplies donated, or troops can use cookie money to purchase the ingredients

Book-Making Workshop

 In the Book-Making Workshop, a Scraps KC event leader will teach participants about different types of bookbinding, and how to mend a favorite book that is falling apart. Participants will create a journal to keep and make another book to give away, using two different bookbinding techniques (comb binding, glue, fold, etc). Exploring different types of decorating covers with stamps, stickers, and marbling, participants will also learn to make pop-up books.

Room Makeover Workshop

In the Room Makeover Workshop, a Scraps KC event leader will teach participants to create an inspiration board, then use sewing, glue, paint, and other tools to refurbish something as well as build something new from repurposed materials in our creative reuse center. Participants can decorate a space for themselves, or if need be, Scraps KC can provide a space at our center to be reimagined.

Textile Art Workshop

During the Textile Art Workshop, a Scraps KC event leader will teach participants about natural and synthetic fibers and fabric, as well as the waste stream of clothing and fabric in our current society’s fast fashion trends. Participants will create a wall hanging to keep by either weaving or embroidering, will learn about mending clothes, then will create a lap blanket from fleece to donate to the homeless.

Collage Art Workshop

During the Collage Art Workshop, a Scraps KC event leader will teach about the color wheel, collage, and how found objects can create art. Participants will explore collage with various materials from our creative reuse center, and will get to see art pieces that others have created with unique materials and objects to convey a specific message. After gathering inspiration, participants will create a collage to communicate a message, and can take their creation home, or leave it to be displayed at Scraps KC.
