STEM Camping Activities

Whether you’re planning a weekend of camping with your troop, or you’re taking your girls to a camp for an afternoon program, there is always more you can do while at camp!

Take a Hike!

Ask the Site Manager about the hike materials.  Each Girl Scout camp has a four-senses hike that would be great for Daisies or Brownies. If your girls are older, they might be interested in a color hike. The Site Managers will be able to give you the materials you need so you and your girls can take a hike around camp and see something that might have gone unnoticed on a normal “walk” across camp.

Letterboxing & Geocaching on Girl Scout property:

Letterboxing trails at camp (all properties)
Geocaching locations at camp (all properties)

*These trails are used by Girl Scouts year-round, and sometimes the elements and usage take their toll on the quality of the cache or letterbox. If you use one of the trails and find damaged materials or a box is missing, please email details of the issue to the Outdoor Program Manager.

Letterboxing & Geocaching off Girl Scout property:

If you are taking girls to another community space and you’d like to Letterbox or Geocache, check out www.letterboxing.org or www.geocaching.com  for other trails.

Creating a new trail:

If your troop is interested in creating a trail for other troops to use on Girl Scout camp property, please contact the Outdoor Program Manager. This is a great way to help other troops have more options when they go to camp, and it's a great team-building activity for your troop!

Orienteering

Orienteering at Camp Tongawood is your chance to learn how to use a compass and then to solve an epic puzzle that will require your newly learned navigational skills! You will follow one of our six tree courses which will lead you to the final clue at the last tree.

Juniors through Ambassadors will have an opportunity to learn the history of navigation, how compasses work, and work together to complete the courses.

Email campdept@gsksmo.org to set up an orienteering session, and we will work to schedule a time for our professionally trained staff to work with your troop. Requests must be made at least one month prior to the desired date.

Are you an experienced orienteering troop leader and want to conduct a self-guided experience for your troop?

  • Follow the steps on the Program Equipment Rental page to reserve compasses.
  • Course instructions can be found on the “START” tree at Tongawood.
