Just for Teens

At Girl Scouts, girls are always counting down to the next adventure they'll go on together. Maybe it's artistic. Maybe it's an experiment. Maybe it's getting outside or helping the community. One thing's for sure. Every adventure is another chance to take the lead and make an impact.

The activities and opportunities below are facilitated by our GSKSMO staff and designed just for Teen Girl Scouts to build upon their Girl Scout Leadership Experience. This list is ever-evolving, so check back often!

Civic Engagement Group

GS Grade Level: Seniors, Ambassadors
Dates: Aug. 14 & 25, Nov. 2 + additional dates TBD
Location: Varies

This special interest group will be comprised of Girl Scouts in 9th-12th grade who are members in the Girl Scouts of NE Kansas & NW Missouri council who are passionate about making a difference in world.  This girl-led group will research issues, create action plans, engage the public sector, and learn how to use their voice to speak truth to power.  They will work on multiple civic initiatives, with a variety of elected officials and organizations.  They will also gain firsthand experience with the change process and build relationships with other change makers.  The group will meet in-person and virtually on a regular basis as determined by the group and the needs they identify. Due to the large geographical area of our council, accommodations will be made for in-person meetings when possible.

This is a one-year commitment, August 2019 – July 2020.

August 14, 6-8 PM: First Meeting
This is an in-person meeting.  It will also be offered virtually for those outside the KC metro area.

August 25, 2-4 PM: Second Meeting
Lawrence Public Library
Meeting with the League of Kansas Municipalities to discuss our first initiative, supporting their efforts to educate youth about the 2020 Census and encourage increased participation in the Census.

November 2
A day with the UMKC Law Program.  Girl Scouts will meet and interact with attorneys, judges, professors, and other legal professionals.

Additional meeting dates, events, and other time commitments will be discussed and decided on by the group as the year unfolds.

This group will require a significant time commitment, at least a few hours every week and sometimes more.  Please consider if this is a commitment you are willing and able to make.

Mentorship Program with Slcket

GS Grade Level: Seniors, Ambassadors
Dates: Sept. 11 & Sept. 18, + ongoing interactions/activities
Location: Varies

Girl Scouts and Slcket are excited to roll out a mentorship program for our Girl Scout Seniors and Ambassadors. Slcket is a technology company that has created the coolest communication platform EVER! Slcket's communication platform is the next evolution in the way people will communicate and connect.

Starting this fall, Seniors and Ambassadors will have an opportunity to engage with local professionals in a choose-your-own-adventure mentorship networking event. Girl Scouts will learn critical skills at the prep meeting like how to create an impactful resume, a meaningful elevator speech and an effective introduction letter. Then at the kick-off event girls will connect with  professionals from a wide range of industries including technology, non-profit management and business and data analytics. Girls will then identify professionals they want as mentors and professionals will follow up with those Girl Scouts. Each of these relationships will look different based on the mentor/mentee dynamic. There may be additional communications and/or events for participants through Girl Scouts and/or Slcket, however, each Girl Scout is expected to manage her mentorship experience following the kick-off event.

There are two mandatory events for girls who decide to engage in this opportunity:

  • September 11: Prep Meeting at GSKSMO HQ
    - Girls will meet the other girls who are participating.
    - Girls will get assistance on their resumes, letters and elevator speeches.
    - Girls will understand what to expect at the September 18 kick-off.

Prior to this meeting girls will receive an email with tips/tricks and guidelines for creating a resume, developing an elevator speech, and writing an introduction letter.

  • September 18: Kick off event at Slcket
    - Girls and mentors will participate in a speed-networking event to quickly introduce girls to a wide variety of professionals and industries.
    - Girls will indicate to the professionals of their choice if they are interested in learning more about that individual's career and/or a potential mentorship.

Please Note:  All professionals who participate in this event will have completed a background check but Girl Scouts will not continue to monitor their relationship. We encourage girls and parents to stay in communication around meeting plans and conversations with the mentor.
