Girl Scouts and Faith

Everything in Girl Scouting is based on the Girl Scout Promise and Law, which include many principles and values that are common across religions. Because we understand that religious instruction is at the center of many families and communities, we invite Girl Scouts to take spiritual journeys via their faith’s religious recognitions. Girl Scouts is welcoming and inclusive to members of all faiths.

See how you can connect your faith with Girl Scouting activities. If you’re a faith-based organization, learn more about how you can partner with Girl Scouts to build compassionate leaders with the values and skills to make our world a better place.

Girl Scouts’ My Promise, My Faith Awards invite girls in grades K-12 to experience a faith journey through exploration of the Girl Scout Law and teachings from their faith. Girl Scouts can earn this pin each year.

Religious Recognitions toggle arrow

Religious recognitions are created by national religious organizations/committees to encourage the spiritual growth of their youth members and reinforce many of the values integral to Girl Scouting. While My Promise, My Faith helps girls connect Girl Scouting with their faith, the religious recognitions programs help girls grow stronger in and learn more specifically about their faith.

Each religious organization/committee develops and administers its own program. The To Serve God brochure shows the religious recognitions that have been created by various faith groups. You can find this brochure, a video that explains the religious recognitions programs, and other resources for collaborating with the faith community at P.R.A.Y. Publishing.

Some religious organizations are not affiliated with P.R.A.Y. or may not have a national office; to learn about their religious recognitions, contact their local leaders.

Girl Scouts Celebrate Faith Week

Every March, during the week of Girl Scouts’ birthday, faith partners join us to help girls celebrate the connections between their faith and Girl Scouts. Celebration days include Girl Scout Sunday, Girl Scout Jummah, Girl Scout Sabbath and Girl Scout Shabbat. It is a perfect opportunity for Girl Scouts to receive the Religious Recognition of their faith.

Girl Scout Week is a time when we shout our Girl Scout pride from the rooftops! It’s also a time when many troops celebrate the connections between Girl Scouting and their faith, learn more about other faiths, and thank faith partners for their support throughout the year. Girls can join in the festivities on three specially designated dates (or a day of your choosing):

  • Girl Scout Sunday: Sunday, March 7, 2027
  • Girl Scout Jummah: Friday, March 12, 2027
  • Girl Scout Sabbath/Shabbat: Friday, March 12 – Saturday, March 13, 2027

Whether they participate in a worship service, plan an activity before or after the service, or organize a service project, your girls can honor those meaningful connections in lots of ways! Check out these resources to help you plan, promote, and carry out your virtual or in-person event with your faith partner. Bilingual resources included.

Tips for Planning a Memorable Event toggle arrow
  1. Work closely with your faith partner. Teaming up will help event planning and promotion go smoothly and deepen the connection between your troop and your faith partner.
  2. Start early. Houses of worship will appreciate the extra time to incorporate your event into their worship schedule!
  3. Include pre- and post-activities. Events before and after the worship service are a great way to share the benefits of Girl Scouting with faith families and give back to your faith partner. Depending on your area’s COVID guidelines, you might host a cookie booth and/or cookies and punch reception after the service or do a service project—check out the activities tip sheet for more.
  4. Promote your event. Spread the word through social media (you can use the images provided below!) and neighborhood channels. Ask your faith partner to promote the event in their newsletters or bulletins. And give your local council a heads up too: they may amplify through their channels.
  5. Thank your faith partner after the event. Faith partners will appreciate a note of thanks after your event, especially one they can share with their community.
